Looking at maps it appears, that when conditions are right, a lee
wave might form that would run north and south from Las Vegas New Mexico to Cheyenne Wyoming. Is this a location where long north south flights can be made in wave lift? If so, could you reference some flight logs Bill Snead |

I think the key words are "in the right conditions". The Rocky
Mountains form a discontinuous ridge line leaving some challenging terrain to cross where good wave is unlikely. This is particularly problematic since the height where reliable wave can be found is usually above 14,000' leaving just a 4,000' band to operate in. However, if one were to operate in Class A airspace as Gordy does, it should be possible to gain enough height to cross the rough spots. Besides the local knowledge you'll receive from NM/CO/WY pilots...
When the conditions appear right, have a look at the HRRR model, Max Updraft Loop for either Domain: SW or Full. http://rapidrefresh.noaa.gov/hrrrcon...un_time=latest Jim |
