Rental glider flight logging...

Do any commercial gliderports use an .igc trace to log flight times?

Of the commercial gliderports you have been to, how were they keeping
track of flight times when they rented a glider to you?


I am looking for an electronic way to automatically log rental glider
flight times.

Thanks Dave for that suggestion. Has anyone on this forum used this before?

Looking to help upgrade the local commercial gliderport from an archaic method to an up to date automated electronic method.

Believe you can also use FLARM and a PDA (etc) to automatically log the release from tow (when the distance between towplane and glider starts to change). Devices can upload the information to the office computer when the towplane is in WiFi range.

Doesn't meet the need of what you're looking for, but I have to give
credit them for being original and I certainly can't speak for how
well it worked.
A few years ago I saw a rental Blanik with a Hobbs meter installed.
It was powered by a solar panel and connected to a switch, I believe a
repurposed stall warning switch mounted on the exterior of the
fuselage. When the glider was flying, the the circut was closed and
the meter logged time.
Don't know if this actually worked as designed, but found it amusing.

When I flew at the Wasserkuppe last summer, they had just started using a system that required the pilot to snap an electronic key into place before flight. At the end of the day all the billing info was rolled up and printed out. I was intrigued by the system.

When I went back in mid-fall hoping for some typical-for-that-time-of-year wave experience, they had quit using the system for some reason. I suspect they'd be glad to share their experience/thoughts if emailed. http://fliegerschule-wasserkuppe.de/

Tim Mara has steered us in the direction of a Fly with CE recorder.
It has a logbook program that comes with it and is relatively
inexpensive. The hobbs meters is a nice idea, but the added benefit
of a igc file produced worthy of badges makes this more attractive.

Warner Springs, CA tracks the times.
They note the time that you pass by the office window under tow, and again on landing. So far it's always within a minute of the time hack I make from takeoff to landing.
