Tesla's decision to license its patents on favorable terms this week raises the chance of standardization of batteries and chargers across brands and perhaps somewhat lower prices. What about standardization across vehicle types (cars, airplanes, vibrators)?
The cost of rechargeable batteries is a large part of the cost of a FES or self-launch electric glider. You'd want to take them out of the glider to charge anyways, so why not swap the batteries between your hybrid vehicle and your aircraft? In the case of FES, most of us would never use up the lifetime charge cycles of the batteries in the glider. The battery packs would not even need to be the same form factor, you'd just need a place to plug in an 'accessory battery pack' that would also function to increase your range. If you took this approach, you could install a smaller battery pack in the car and save a few bucks. Obviously not tomorrow... but would this work? |
