Kruger National Park in South Africa, early 70's. Working with game
rangers to do health checks on elephants. Using a Bell 206 with doors off, game ranger with a dart gun and heavy duty tranquilizers, a specific herd of elephants... get them moving out in line to avoid the noisy annoying helicopter that just doesn't seem to go away.... move in close to the last one in line and dart it. As it goes down, a ground crew following us does a blood sample, a fecal sample, temps and other physical signs, antibiotic in the eyes, an injection to help it wake up from the tranquilizer and on to the next one. We shot about 15 elephants that day and all were healthy and just fine for the experience. They are such a magnificent animal. Just another day in the life of a helicopter pilot in South Africa back in the 70's. Ol Shy & Bashful |
