2016 SSA Convention Speaker session on anti collision technology.
http://ssaconvention.org/ Just another reason to come to Greenville for the convention. We are getting our annual ice storm out of the way this weekend, so the weather's going to be great, come on down. SF Anti-Collision Technology for Glider Pilots: Now and the Future Dave Nadler Glider collisions are a frightening and dangerous hazard technology can help avoid. But, what technology? How can FLARM and ADS-B help prevent collisions today, and in future? Between gliders, and between gliders and other types of aircraft? What about transponders? We'll cut through the hype and clearly explain these technologies, how they can (and cannot) help us glider-guiders, with minimal technobable. If you're baffled by the barrage of confusing articles and advertisements (and especially nonsense on the rec.aviation.soaring newsgroup), come to this talk! Known to many in soaring for his technical expertise, as well as his ability as a competition pilot, Dave Nadler has accumulated more than 4,000 hours in gliders, including more than 1,500 hours in motorgliders. Dave started soaring in 1974 with the MIT Soaring Association and began competition in 1978. Finding available instrumentation unhelpful, Dave developed his own avionics package, and his flight computer designs subsequently introduced many firsts that we now take for granted. Dave's ILEC SN10s are flown by thousands of pilots in more than 20 countries. To bring the FLARM traffic awareness and anti-collision system to United States soaring, Dave took a year off from professional pursuits and joined the FLARM team for 2010. Dave contributed heavily to FLARM version 5 and the new PowerFLARM product now flying in 1000 US sailplanes. Dave is a popular contributor to SOARING magazine, blogger, and lecturer. He and his wife Renee live in Boston. |

I really thought the catchy title for this one would get some discussion going about the convention speakers, especially regarding this topic since anything posted on this news group about Flarm, Transponders or ADS-B seems to light up.
