Anyone have any detailed instructions for internal timing of a newer slick magneto? To set the points gap you need a tiny tool made by Slick. It goes into the applicable L or R slot in the magnet rotor, depending on rotation direction (see data plate on mag re rotation), and the rotor is turned in its proper direction (as viewed from the mounting flange end) so the tool is against the armature, and the points are set so they're just opening. This will give a gap of about .008" to .010" at the points. Using a feeler gauge isn't all that accurate, and if the points open a bit too early or late the spark will be pretty weak. On a magneto, the points open at the point of maximum flux differential, and that happens several degrees after the magnet has passed through full register. The distributor gear is set so the applicable L or R mark is lined up with the mark on the rotor gear. A pin goes into the gear and housing to lock the mag in this position for installation, with the crank set at #1 firing position (not TDC). Don't forget to remove the pin before turning that prop!
