restoring aircraft

I am interested in restoring an older airplane( navion, swift, or an
older cessna 300 series). What do I need to do to get the plane
certified.

Thanks for the advice, it seems I need to get friendly with an AP, is
it common to find one that will allow me to do all the work( within
reason).

The expense can be a surprise, My brother in law and I restored a
basket case Commonwealth and ended up with a $20,000 airplane for
$31,000, and he is an A&P!

I will have a $40K+ 7AC Champ by the time I am done, and that does not count my
time doing it.

My friend restored a J-3 Cub two years ago that needed extensive work, i.e.
spars, new longerons, new engine...

He billed that guy something ridiculously low considering all the time he had
in it, but same thing....the guy had a $25k airplane for $40k.
