I was at a conference in Minneapolis today (Saturday) and heard this pilot
talk about his 2003 round-the-world flight. He didn't have much time to tell his flying stories today, but I did get to chat briefly with him after his presentation. http://www.diabetesworldflight.com/ (From the link) Diabetes World Flight (DWF) is the first round-the-world flight by a pilot with Type 1 Diabetes, finishing in USA on 19th February 2003. Over five months, Douglas Cairns made 63 flights over 26,300 nautical miles and visited 22 countries while raising funds for diabetes research - US$26,000 to date. (From the link) Douglas Cairns is 40 years old. After graduating from Edinburgh University in 1985 he spent four years in the Royal Air Force where he completed his fast-jet flying training on Hawks and instructor qualification on Jet Provosts. After five months instructing, Douglas was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in 1989 and was unable to fly in the RAF. (More about Doug from the link) In 1999, he discovered that it was possible to obtain a US Medical licence to fly solo privately in the USA by meeting certain medical requirements. He obtained his US Private Pilot Licence (PPL) in December 2000. He also gained a "Special Pilot Licence" in Australia in February 2001 and validated his USA licence to fly in Thailand. Montblack |
