I'm doing a little poll among you to know if in your pilot activities you
are using Linux applications, for flight planning, navigation reports, etc.

If you have a favorite application, tell me then i can update the
document "Linux Aviation HOWTO".

I have a Windows 95 laptop that I would like to wipe the OS from and
install Linux.

Not specifically a Linux solution but perhaps applicable anyway:

I happen to have FreeBSD (Unix) workstations and a Mac (again FreeBSD based) laptop.

My solution was to use all web based planning tools. I gathered my favorite weather links and links to DUATS & ENFLIGHT on a private web site. This way I have have a consistant planning platform accessable from any computer regardless of operating system.

Wiping is easy. Reformat the HD.

Better approach:
1) get the Linux install package (download and burn to CD or go
buy one at your local computer store, usually about $20-50).
2) MAKE SURE the CD (and/or floppy if needed) is an install disk!
3) change the bios to boot from CD or floppy first, then HD
4) have fun!

If you've never installed linux/unix before, spend a lot of time
reading and understanding what you're about to do.

And make sure your hardware is viable for unix/linux

I would love to see some aviation applications for Linux. The only one I
ever saw was an electronic log book that didn't work very well. Admittedly
that was a while back.

I am limited to browser based weather and the DUATS site.
