In the recent Airbus nose gear thread, someone posted a link to a report
about a B-777 fly-by-wire upset. I can't find it now and am asking if someone can bring up the link to this report. TIA, D. |

No link, but there's a good description of what happened n page 46 of the 26 Sept edition of AvWeek. Basically the problem was in the firmware loaded into the Honeywell air data reference unit that feeds air data and altitude information to a bunch of systems, including the primary flight controls, autopilot, autothrottle, pilot displays and autobrakes. The FAA issued AD 2005-18-51 which requires that any Adiru loaded with -06 or -07 software be reloaded with -03 within 72 hours. The -03 version has its own problems that they've been trying to fix revolving around the ability to use data from failed sensors. There's a fairly extensive blow-by-blow in the article, which also notes that things would have been a lot worse had the primary flight computer not used the data from the standby air data source to dampen the initial pitching motion and would have gone utterly to pieces if there hadn't been someone looking out the window and deciding that what the instrumentation was saying (like the slip indicator swinging to full right) made absolutely no sense. Making one feel really warm-and-fuzzy, page 52 of the same edition carries a report that Airbus is considering new functionality from Honeywell that will allow software to take control of the aircraft from the pilots in the event of a EGPWS alarm, and in later evolution, prevent the aircraft from flying into prohibited areas. In the case of the triple-seven the pilots were able to beat the flight control system into submission, but here we have the provider of the same quality software proposing to make it impossible for the flight crew to do so. |
