Airworthiness certification of an experimental

Where can I find a fairly detailed explanation of the airworthiness
certification of an experimental aircraft? Specifically, I'd like to
know if experimentals get certified in a class (land, sea, single
engine, multi-engine) or just in category. I'm sure I'll have
additional questions, which is why I'd like some references to the
overall process.
