The Germans used nitrous in the Me-109 and the FW-190 as well, if I recall
correctly. They had to go to unusual measures because their petroleum
industry couldn't produce useful quantities of high-test avgas.

More recently, Bruce Bohannon used nitrous in a couple of aircraft he used
for time to climb and altitude attempts - Pushy Galore and the (Exxon)
Flying Tiger. Pushy's 0-200 was fairly happy on nitrous, but he had a
couple of nasty engine failures on the 0-540 in the Tiger and switched to
forced air induction.

My AME told me that nitrous was used in Mosquitoes and Spitfires used to
chase V1 missiles. He said if the jet engine had not been invented, that
nitrous use would still be a military top secret. I have no further
authority or cite.

Gee, thanks. I did, in fact. I found very little on U.S. use in warplanes,
or in races. While I have a lot of experience in some areas, this is not one
of them. The folks in this group represent a wealth of information not
available on Google. Just listen to Dudley for a while.

Al
