We have flown this 150hp low compression engine, which we got with
1850 SMOH out of a Cessna 172, for 15 years trouble free in our Glasair. We had it overhauled about 8 years ago when it hit 2200 SMOH out of the Cessna and have since put on about 1000 hours since that overhaul. The engine is about 4500 TTSN. These numbers are from my memory, although I have complete original logs. It has always had 25 hour oil changes and has an oil cooler and a very good sticky foam Brackett air filter. The engine runs strong with the compression around 72,72,62,62; obviously somewhat low in two cyls but no noticable power loss or anything. Oil consumption is about 1 qt in 8-10 hours. It really runs like a watch. Never even had a hiccup in 15 years. We are interested in replacing it with an experimental O-360-A1A from Mattituck. I am interested in better climb and an eventual constant speed prop for our Glasair and am not getting any younger so I feel, as do my partners, that now is a good time to take the plunge. I would like to sell it with the carb, since the O-360 takes a different one, but am leaning toward keeping the mags, starter, and fuel pump and getting credit on those accessories from Mattituck when they build up the engine although that is all negotiable if someone wants that stuff. We have also done a lot of things to our InterAv alternator to get it working the way we like so I would like to keep that as well. I see prices from about the mid $5,000 up to around $8,000 for this engine in Trade-A-Plane, so would be thinking of selling at the low end of that range. As I say, the engine is about 1000 SMOH and currently running every week in our Glasair here at Torrance Airport in California. Being low compression and 150hp, the fuel consumption has been around 7.5 GPH in our Glasair at 160 kts. We use 100LL and always add the TCP additive (lead scavenger). Occasional, we are at Compton airport where they still have the red gas, 80 octane. I hope this can help someone. Anyone interested who is local who would like to take a ride, I am available just about every weekend. |
