I may have an opportunity to fly to Orlando from KLOM this weekend and
stay for a few days. Unfortunately, I probably won't be able to stay long enough to get to sun & fun. Any recommendations on airports that have access to rental cars and reasonable parking fees? Thanks Dave M35 |

I have had very excellent service every time I have used Galaxy Aviation at
KMCO. They have cheap rental cars right there at the fbo. They can arrange reasonable hotels nearby. Parking was $ 8.00 a night last time I was there ( at least a year ago). Verify all these details to make sure that they still apply.. Have a great trip.. Jon "dave" wrote in message . .. Thanks Jon but but I imagine that MCO is too big for me. Seems like
KISM is the best choice. Dave M35 me wrote: I have had very excellent service every time I have used Galaxy Aviation at KMCO. They have cheap rental cars right there at the fbo. Dave,
You should choose whichever one you are most comfortable with.. That is one of the great thing about mco they really treat the little guy great. It is a big airport and you do need to be able to communicate and navigate up to that level of airport. It is a lot of fun.. Have a nice flight whatever airport you go to. Jon,
I've gotten similar positive comments from others about MCO. I was concerned that MCO wouldn't want to cater to small GA planes. Sounds like I was wrong. As it turns out, the trip is scrubbed for this week anyway. We're going commercial. Dave M35 me wrote: Dave, You should choose whichever one you are most comfortable with.. If you get the ILS or GPS to RW 13 it takes you right over Disney World, which of course they do not normally let you do. KISM is convenient to most of the Orlando area attractios and is actually closer to Disney (and probably Sea World) than MCO. And no toll roads!! It always bugged me to come out of MCO and the first thing you see is the toll booth (although the locals know the way around it), then you go a couple of miles and there is another... I can remember (I won't say how long ago) when I first drove the Bee-line from I4 to Coco Beach, the toll for the entire length was $ .10 (10 cents) and MCO was still (only) an Air Force base and all you saw from the Bee-line were several rows of B-52 tails sticking up.... I have wondered if there is a way to drive to it to get a closer look. I remember visiting Orlando when I was a kid and seeing them fly around, thought they were so cool. The Beeline is still there . . . the Central Florida Autobahn . . . but I think the tolls about $1.75 going from MCO to I-95. Was it really 10 cents? Take care and blue skies John |

I lived over on the west coast of Fla and another guy and I would occasionally drive over to Coco to go surfing on 'real' waves... I think they have added a couple of lanes to the Bee-line, but there is so much traffic and toll booths that it probably takes twice as long to drive the entire length. Of course, there weren't many traffic cops in those days either.. ;-) And yes, I look for that one lone leftover B52 every time I go by there. It just doesn't look as big as they used to look... I was at McCoy in the early 60's where my dad helped maintain the SAC
planes. During the Cuban Missile Crisis the base was full of army troops living in tents and air defense missile batteries were scattered around. I remember looking up into the sky and being surprised at seeing U2's climbing quietly towards the stratosphere. -- Best Regards, Mike http://photoshow.comcast.net/mikenoel Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana. McCoy AFB shut down in the 70's, but they did have B-52s satellite based at MCO into the early 80's -- still there in '82 IIRC. You can get to the B-52 park. Going into the main entrance towards the terminal, take the first exit past the Beeline (oops... it's now officially called the Beachline -- don't ask). The exit is marked for remote parking -- Blue Lot and Gold Lot. When you get to the traffic light end of the ramp, turn left (the Blue Lot entrance is straight ahead.) You are now on the perimeter road. About 200 yards ahead the road turns right heading back towards the Beeline past the air cargo area on the left. When you get down close to the fence at the Beeline you can take a right turn into the B-52 park. The Beeline toll is $1.25 between MCO and I-95. Basically the same as it was in the mid 80's. The big difference is that there is just one toll booth just east of SR-417, instead of 2 or 3 scattered along the way. Gerry |
