Just looking at a copy of "Into the Sunset", a history of Convair/GD
operations in San Diego. They have a story about one of their test pilots, an ex-Navy man, doing some kind of B-24 test off the coast when he spots a carrier. He lowers the flaps and gear and turns downwind into the pattern. According to the story, there was no one visible on the flight deck when he made a low pass- sounds like change your shorts time. -- Jim Atkins Twentynine Palms CA USA "Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. We had an Air Force F-86 making landing approaches on the
Bon Homme Richard in 1959 off the Philippines. Luckily he did not try to touch down on the carrier deck or we would have been picking up the pieces of his F-86 with its too-weak-for-carrier-landings struts! Famous Fury Flyer! Reminds me of a story I heard while serving with the 552 AEW&C Wing at
McClellan AFB. One of the birds (EC-121) was on patrol east of Saigon vectoring fighters to intercept MIGs. One of their preferrences was to fly in clean air (no clouds). Cloud cover was below 2000ft. They carefully decended thru 2000ft into clean air, and were on a perfect approach to a carrier deck. I was told they were looking up into the tower as they passed (after some quick maneuvering) vincent p. norris wrote: On Mon, 14 Jul 2003 12:30:48 -0400, "begme" wrote: Hope the SOB got fired!!
