Default MX-20 panel question

Looking over ads for used aircraft, I occasionally see a combination
of a Garmin 430 GPS with a MX-20 mfd.

What does the MX-20 display provide (other than size) that you don't
get with the Garmin 430?

BTW: I think the MX-20 also displays sectionals for the MFD background.

Does the 430 do airways?

The MX20/GMX200 only displays airways, it won't let you program them
into the 430's flightplan.

Visual depiction of airways, sectionals as background, SafeTaxi, Jepp
ChartView/Garmin FliteCharts. It can also control stormscopes, radar,
EGPWS, etc.

So if you have a 430 and MX20 you have to download (and pay for) 2
sets of data?

Yes and no. No, if you don't have weather or Jeppview, i.e. you are
just using the basic MX20 functions. Every now and then (couple of
years or so) you may want to update the terrain database and the VFR
and IFR pages. If you have weather (WSI or XM) you have to pay for
that. If you have JeppView, you have to pay for that in addition to
your 430/530 database subscription (only needed if used for IFR for
430/530); however, if you have JeppView and fly IFR you can save on
your paper IFR charting subscription, be it Jeppesen or government
issued charts. JeppView gives you paper charts and plates (you have
to print them).
I had the MX20 (WSI weather and JeppView) with a KLN94 for more than
five years and I really like it.
