Local Army major recalls wartime experiences, By DAN MARSH McKinney
Courier-Gazette (EXCERPT) Dr. Edward M. Slack Jr., U.S. Army Air Corps major and retired McKinney optometrist, knows he is a man who has led a blessed life. "We've had quite a few blessings," he said on a recent afternoon to his wife, Dorris, who believes strongly that God was "saving him for me" throughout his many exploits in the European Theater of World War II. "I thank God for the Air Force," Slack said in his McKinney home, browsing through a pile of newspaper clippings, photographs, documents, handwritten notes, and other memorabilia from a time when the world was at war. "I wouldn't have had it any other way. When I joined the Army in 1941 - volunteered for pilot training - I believe it was a turning point in my life." Slack is a war hero; he has the medals to prove it. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross for safely returning his B-17 to base with two of its engines shot out after a bombing mission over the Mediterranean. He was also decorated with the Air Medal and eight oak leaf clusters for "outstanding aerial actions in the European and North African...
