Are there any accounts of the activities of the US ground and air corps activities in this period re the defense of Java?

Try They Fought With What They Had; it's the story of the USAAF in Java,
Australia, and the Philippines in 1941-42. Check Amazon and see if they have
it (probably used). The more recent Osprey book on P-40 Aces of the Pacific
has some info on the 17th PS (Provisional) which was made up of a number
of Philippine vets who were ordered to Australia in mid-Dec 41 to ferry P-40s
back to Luzon; when the ferry route was cut-they went to Java. Two pilots
made ace, and they had a decent kill/loss ratio in the air. The squadron
destroyed its P-40s and flew on C-47s to Australia on 1 Mar 42.
