After much petitioning by its advocates, we got the good old fashioned
assigned tasks today. Start gate roulette. Gaggle flying. Leeching. Picking off markers. Totting up tail numbers as you pass them by or cringing as they pass you. 15 meter was a 275 miles, and open 332 even though open launched second. Open left pretty quickly; 15 played some start gate roulette before heading out in big gaggles. The gaggles were a bit too big at the first turn, alas there was a midair collision. Fortunately both pilots are uninjured. This is all second hand -- I'm sure the official report will have much more detail. Much dissection will follow tomorrow. The second leg from west to east over the hill country was quite good, until it all got blue and weak at Medina lake dam. A slow trip upwind through blueish conditions to cotulla, then a rocket ride home down a classic uvalde street. I left a 6 knot thermal at cotulla 1500 under Mc 3 glide, and never turned again. Lots of open class finishes as the sun was sinking low. I hope Dave Nadler posts the open class story, it should be good. John Cochrane BB |
