For learning about flying and aircraft, there's no place like Usenet --
specifically the "Rec.Aviation.Piloting", "Rec.Homebuilt", and "Rec.Aviation.Owning" newsgroups. These forums attract hundreds (thousands?) of aviation enthusiasts each day, and represent a depth and breadth of knowledge that is simply not available anywhere else. Many "regulars" have participated in these groups for years. Over time, relationships develop that transcend the impersonal nature of the internet, occasionally developing into strong and fast friendships. The "Rec.Owning" newsgroup in particular has developed into a close-knit bunch, with many of us passionate about our airplanes and the lives we lead with them. (Or is that "for" them? :-) Over the years Mary and I have met many of our "cyber-friends" in "real" life, and without exception these folks have been wonderful! The major drawback to the newsgroups, however, is that they do not allow the transmission of photos. As a result, we all operate in a text-based, 2-dimensional world, never knowing what each other looks like, never being able to "show off" our favorite flying machines. Until now! Visit http://www.alexisparkinn.com/rec_aviation.htm to see a webpage made solely for use by members of the rec.aviation newsgroups. We can now see and admire each other's aircraft, and appreciate what we're all working so hard to maintain -- and over 75 newsgroup participants now have photos of their planes on this website! For the month of April, we've got three new additions and updates: - From John Forster, of Kent, England, his cool Grumman Tiger... - From Tina Marie, of Houston, Texas, her '55 TriPacer... - From Michelle P., her Maule M7-235 (and her pic of driving a tractor at Sun N Fun... Want YOUR pictures in the Rogue's Gallery for all of us to drool on? Email some to me at , along with a brief bio, and I'll get 'em up for you! -- Jay Honeck Iowa City, IA Pathfinder N56993 www.AlexisParkInn.com "Your Aviation Destination" |

a.b.p.a is a good place to view pictures of planes for that day, but it
is a terrible place for finding a specific plane/person picture from these rec.aviation groups. If someone asks me if I have some (old) pictures of my plane online, I point them to Jay's site or the Ercoupe site and they can view them. Jay's site is set up nicely that I can browse the pictures of the people and planes at my leisure or look up specific people or planes from these groups to get some (usually wrong ;-) impression of the posters. When my plane gets out of annual, I will try to take some newer/better pictures of my Ercoupe and submit them to Jay's site. It allows others in these groups to get an idea of my flying. I can't imagine trying to keep track of the various people and planes on these rec groups by downloading their pictures from a.b.p.a. and trying to catalog, sort and filter out the non rec. planes. Jay's site is a great complement to these rec groups. I recently took a picture of a Citabria (N91RA) at FRM (yes, the same one that's on the April cover of AOPA), anyone interested in seeing it can check it out on a.b.p.a. one of these days... -Greg Burkhart N93332 "Shiver Me Timbers" wrote in message ... And if those three people were that interested in sharing pictures of
their pride and joy with the aviation community then one would think they would have both the intelligence and decency to share them by posting their own pictures to..... alt.binaries.pictures.aviation *sigh* I know you're a troll, but (for those who may be wondering) here are the two reasons alt.binaries isn't workable for the "Rogue's Gallery": 1. Many ISPs don't carry the binary newsgroups. As a result, many people simply don't get to see the cool pix that are posted there. 2. Most ISPs that DO carry the binary groups only archive them for a few days. I am only able to "see" the pix for about four days before my ISP deletes them. To make "alt.binaries.pictures.aviation" a viable alternative, all 77 participants would have to re-post their pictures every four days. -- Jay Honeck Iowa City, IA Pathfinder N56993 www.AlexisParkInn.com "Your Aviation Destination" |

I'm using the same newsgroup server (mchsi) and am lucky to see pictures on a.b.p.a. over 2 days old. I have missed quite a few 'Hangar Queen' pictures because I don't check these newsgroups daily. ;-( If the 77 people would upload all of their pictures every 4 days to a.b.p.a., it would probably reduce the archive to a day or 2 at most. I enjoy browsing through Jay's site. Just looking at the rec pictures, it is hard to even tell that the main site is for his Inn. |

... The major drawback to the newsgroups, however, is that they do not allow the transmission of photos. Says who.....?????? alt.binaries.pictures.aviation A newsgroup is one of the worst ways to distribute binary images. Huge amounts of data are sent to servers that never need them, and the representation of the data is inherently inefficient. In addition, the data do not remain indefinitely. Finally, have you considered the possibility that those of us reading rec.aviation.piloting (and other text newsgroups) do not care to visit the binary newsgroups, trying to sift through all the other stuff there to find a handful of messages, or that many of us use ISPs that simply don't even carry the binary newsgroups? Hmmmmm..... Do I smell another commercial plug for alexisparkinn comming up. Ahhh...your true motivation appears. It's not that you actually think there's something technically wrong, you're just offended at the scent of commercialism. We had this thread awhile back already. Do us all a favor, go back and savor the thread on Google Groups, and leave the rest of us who've already experienced it alone. Pete |

I'm just grateful my reader doesn't show the pictures some try to post. The lack of an occasional plane picture is more than offset by the reassuring knowledge that I will never ever stumble across a portrayal billed as Christina Aguilera doing something biologically improbable with an accommodating stranger or a root vegetable. |
