Holy moly, Sam! I've lived in Colorado since 1976, and I can reliably report
there IS no good camping here. Moreover, the State Tourism Board wants
everyone to stay away as we're already overfull of Texans and Californians,
and effete easterners really aren't welcome either.

That noted, as a helpful fellow soaring pilot, IMHO you can hardly go wrong no
matter where you go or in what type of campground you stay, though I have no
personal experience with "First Class RV-ing" other than having been grateful
to find a KOA in Florida right after college graduation in 1972 when all I
wanted to do was find a place to unroll my sleeping bag without worrying about
being hassled.

Me not being "a city person," every place I've camped at in Colorado's boonies
has more than met my expectations, including those freebie "boonies airport"
overnighters. That includes everything from eastern plains stuff (yeah,
there's plenty of nifty stuff worth experiencing on 'em...Purgatoire Valley
f'rinstance!) to "the mountains," to the western slope (plenty of
off-the-beaten-path but 2WD-accessible stuff around Cortez, e.g. Hovenweep),
and everything from genuine boonies to National Parks to "lesser parks," some
even within spitting distance of I-70 (e.g. Colorado National Monument just
west of Grand Junction).

No real mountain snows yet, but if you're on a schedule, do keep in mind that
it takes but one storm to trap you for several days west of the Divide, when
you're considering potential camping sites...sort of the camper's version of
reading soaring skies when going XC, you might say.

Have enjoyed several "Turkey Day week" car-camping trips in the N-S band from
Grand Junction to Chaco Canyon (NM), several encompassing central and eastern
CO/NM down to Guadalupe Peak (TX), and several entirely on the eastern plains.
Expect cold nights that time of year, but storms aside, also expect greatly
reduced fellow campers post-Labor Day, and pleasantly warm-when-sunny days -
unless in the high country, where lapse rate rules most days (until solid
winter, when the plains are often colder during the day than the
hills...interestingly weird microclimatry effects).

It is a shame that Some Colradoians do not know that all of Colorado from theRio Grande River is still a part of Texas per the treaty with the United States of America. By the way, it was changed from Tejas to Texas. Friendly people, U.S. Native American Texicans. Spelling is correct.

Camp at Southfork or at Rio Grande Park above Southfork towards Wolfcreek pass.

Take a right (north) at Southfork. Have a look at Wagon Wheel Gap, Love
Lake, Creede, Lake City... Beautiful country and the soaring is
astounding in the summer time.
