Planespotter near-disaster

A crowd of about 1,000 had gathered to watch the final landing of a Transall
C-160 which was about to be decommissioned after many years of service. All
appeared to be going smoothly as it approached the Ballenstedt airfield in
Germany. Suddenly the pilot reported that he could not see the start of the
runway from his cockpit -- and came down on a side road where many of the
spotters were standing. As some fled in terror, the braver or more foolhardy
stood their ground, keeping their cameras trained on the 31-ton aircraft to
catch every second of the action. And two of them standing beside a fence
post came within inches of being crushed under its wheels. The plane then
bounced up in the air, the pilot regained control and landed it safely.

In the VietNam War, the entire country was divided into artillary districts (for
lack of a better term) and as pilots, it was your job to radio ahead to see if
any unit was firing arty in the flight path you intended.

As soon as I left Ben Hoa, for example, I'd call "Bien Hoa Artillary" and ask
if they had any outgoing to worry about so I wouldn't fly thru it. If I was
headed for Song Be, I'd radio ahead to "Song Be Artillary" to see if anything
was going on in their area of responsibility...again...so I wouldn't fly into
it.

The prob here was it's S Vietnamese...one night in Ben Hoa, a SVietnamese
battery accidentally fired 180° out of faze and hit the unit next to mine
killing/wounding more than 4 soldiers 50 yards away who were taking a shower.
It was at night. What made it worse was they did it again to the SAME UNIT two
hours later wounding/killing 20 more who were asleep in their bunks!!

Friendly fire is a bitch!
