We have had very little rain in Texas this fall. Is anyone interested in a
handicapped open distance contest during December, January, and February? Longest handicap distance flown in Texas wins. Bill Snead 6W |

Well Bill, with your proven and authenticated knowledge of the
downwind aspects of Texas flying, your fantastic crew, and the humble handicap of the PW-5 (which many others believe isn't an XC ship,) I don't know if anyone, even with be most beautiful of sailplanes, would challenge you in this endeavor. Hmmm.......Any takers? John Downing |

In central Texas in the winter we have winds out of the south west about 60
percent of the time, out of the north west about 30 percent of the time and various directions and calm about 10 percent of the time. In the summer the winds are nearly always from the south east in central Texas. In west Texas, the winds are frequently out of the south west. In the summer the wind are frequently out of the east or west in my limited experienxce. Bill Snead PS - Some nice cloud streets in the Austin area this afternoon. |

Marfa (MRF) sees Southerly winds, generally. Fly North towards Carlsbad, NM or
Odessa, TX. East to San Angelo, TX often looks good. West towards El Paso is tricky with terrain and airspace. A South heading won't work - the Rio Grande river and Mexico are 75 miles south of Marfa! Mountains that produce our local winter-spring wave are along the Rio Grande. ADIZ / Border awareness essential. Consult WAC Chart CH-23 and El Paso sectional for XC planning. Marfa field elevation is almost 5,000' msl. The terrain 50 miles to the north - beyond the Marfa Plateau and Davis Mountains - drops to 3,000' msl. WAC Chart 23 reveals all! Come visit our new soaring facility at Marfa.
