So, I'm packing up the glider trailer and Grand Cherokee for a trip that
will end at the Alamogordo Soaring Fiesta on the 29th. The space is very limited and I can't quite figure out how all the stuff is going to fit. Then something catches my eye. The spare wheel for the Komet trailer and the Jeep wheels are both a 5 bolt pattern. Whipping out my 6" steel ruler, the bolt centers are as close to the same as I can measure. Hmmm, not possible. The German trailer is metric of course and the Jeep? Well, who knows these days. Only way to tell is mount the trailer spare on the Jeep. I jack the Jeep and yank a rear wheel and try the trailer spare - IT FITS PERFECTLY! Now I don't need that space hogging spare inside the Jeep. I can use the trailer spare for both. Now, everything fits. Who woulda thunk? Bill Daniels |

Great discovery. I started doing that about 2 years ago with my 1-26 trailer
and the Ranger I tow it with. Gotta love it! Good Soaring to all, MG San Diego |

My Jeep spare was one of them and I am happy to use the far more robust trailer spare. I'd weigh the trailer to make sure that the tire loading is within the limits of the space saver spare. Trailers can be heavier than they look. If you do use one, there is a lot of money riding on it - literally. Bill Daniels |

However, I note that many trailers don't even have a spare. I assume that the plan is to park the trailer on the roadside while the tow car takes the flat into town to be fixed. I'm better off than that. If I get a double flat, (I don't know of anyone who has had one of those) I'll just remove one of the trailer tires and put it on the Jeep and leave the trailer while I drive into town to get the flats fixed. Theoretically, this would make it possible to deal with a triple flat. One spare for six wheels on the ground seems pretty reasonable to me. Bill Daniels |

Coupla years ago I had a blowout on my mid-1980's Komet and trashed the rim.
Local junkyard guy found a matching rim for my new spare, and I think he said it came from a Ford Pinto. Mike Yankee (Address is munged to thwart spammers. To reply, delete everything after "com".) |
