Now THIS is a great aviation video:

Not only is it hilarious, it's the best video of a PBY Catalina I've
seen, too!

Many thanks to John O. for sending it in...

I guessed where that was from before even clicking on it. It's the opening
scene from "Always" - a Spielberg flick worth watching just for all the
flying scenes in it. Spielberg loves to put warbirds in movies.

I watched that movie again not too long ago. I can't handle Holly Hunter's
cheesiness. Dumbest friggin'....but I rewound the opening scene...must have
watched it a dozen times now total. Thanks for the link the best part of
the movie!

The PBY fishing video is great. I forwarded the link to my Dad who flew PBYs
in the Navy. I'm sure he'll get a kick out of it. Kevin Dunlevy

Question: Were Cats ever used for firefighting? (The context of the
sequence is that the Cat is scooping water into its tanks.) I can't
imagine it's possible for a twin-engine warbird to sneak up on somebody with
even marginal hearing.

Yes, many Cats were converted to firebombers. I don't know exactly how
many, or if any are still active. I know of one that crashed in California
in 1998 or so while working a fire there.

I don't think it would be easy to sneak up on a couple of guys in a boat
like that either - but it's still a great scene.

I don't think they scooped, though. I thought that the CL-215 and 415 were
the only ones that did that. (I could be wrong)

The Cat could scoop four tons of water in fourteen seconds according to
several websites.

Don't forget the Martin Mars! It's the battleship of firebombers - 27 tons
of water per drop.

Well, the one guy was asleep. He would've been easy. The other guy,
maybe he was deaf. Otherwise, they'd have to have been fishing right next
to a huge waterfall, or been running a generator for their fridge or
something for them to not notice the sound of those big radials echoing in
the wilderness.

I really enjoyed that movie, but it's not like Speilberg has a reputation
for making his movies factually correct or anything. We could nitpick
the unrealistic aviation screw-ups in that movie all evening.
