In the summertime, many of us enjoy flying in either Truckee
(soartruckee.com) or Minden (soarminden.com). Both are near lake Tahoe, right on the border of California and Nevada. Both have exceptional soaring conditions in the summertime. I've never flown Minden, but I can highly recommend Soar Truckee. It's a wonderful place with lots of friendly people, great soaring conditions, a nice campground, and an all-around high quality operation. I'm not familiar with how rentals work at either one of these places. If you're planning on flying there many times, it might be worth joining one of the clubs that operate out of these airports in the summertime. I'm a member of BASA (flybasa.org), which is a great and very well equipped club. I know that NCSA (Northern California Soaring Association) and Silverado also base gliders in Truckee in the summer. Air sailing is another glider operation in the area, near Reno. I've never been there, but I've heard it's a good place and the cost of tows is supposed to be quite reasonable. http://www.airsailing.org/ Enjoy, Francois On Feb 22, 1:14 pm, Uros wrote: I would like to spend some time flying in Nevada (or some other place on the West coast) and because of that I would like to ask you: - which place would you recommend - when is the best time to visit - where I can rent glider Best regards Uros |

Thermals were 12-15,000' most every day. Insurance required was $25,000/$250,000 bodily/property liability and $25,000 hull liability. I got mine from Avemco. It takes a few minutes to get the policy and it can be done at the office at Soar Minden. A one year policy was $395, but once you cancel, you get most of that back. Also note that Soar Minden offer attractive 5, 7, 10 day packages that include a daily high tow, O2, chute, hotel, transfers, transport, and some instruction time. They made the entire experience as painless as possible. http://www.soarminden.com/rental.asp /Adam |

Just to note, it seems that the required limits have increased. When I was there this past January the requirement was $40,000 hull, and I don't recall the rest. There was also an option to pay Soar Minden a relatively small waiver fee which would clear you for any liability above $40,000, leaving you responsible for the first $40,000 out of pocket. I didn't quite understand how these two make sense together, but that's how it was. Interesting tip about the cancellation, I didn't know that before. I didn't end up needing anything from Soar Minden because I was only there for a short time and didn't fly alone, but I'll keep that in mind for the next time. -- Michael Ash Rogue Amoeba Software |

I think my brain temporarily shut off while writing that last sentence. What I meant to say was that I didn't end up needing insurance or a waiver, since I never flew solo during my time there. -- Michael Ash Rogue Amoeba Software |
