In or over the Rainbow

On my last GA flight where I acted as safety pilot on an IFR flight
plan, I got a video
of our shadow on the clouds. So, I will letchya all decide in 43
seconds or less if I was over or in the rainbow

For those interested, the technical name you are looking at is called
a Glory.

I found it fascinating how the size of the glory changes dramatically
based on distance from the cloud tops.

You're always in the rainbown. Only difference is, when you are on the
surface, the horizon always bisects it.

Yeah, basically when you look at a rainbow you are at the tip end of a
cone. you are effectively at the center of projection and the sun is
always on a line extending from the center of the rainbow and the tip
of that cone. Tha's why you usually see them when the sun is relatively
low. The higher the sun is, the more of the rainbow is buried in the
earth. Since the cloud required is all below you when you;'re flying ,
there's no horizon to cut the arc...

BTW, if you take a camera with you regularly, take some colored filters
as well. I was lucky enough to have a yellow filter with me one day and
got a brilliant shot of one up in Canada. The filter increases the
contrast dramatically. They look kind of dull without it.

Back in the day, when I had my Canon AE1, I got into filters.
different lenses and such, but now that the digital age and "shirt
pocket" size cameras are the fad of the day, makes it handy to whip it
out when needed :-) rather then the bulky lens, filters and everything
else that comes with a "real camera"

Yeah, I never knew al that much about photography, but had th efilters
and used to try them if I had time. I got a real good one of a glory I
have on disc somewhere. I won 100 bucks with it at a contest held by a
local bank, in fact. I'll have a rummage around and see if i can find
it. I haven't seen your youtube one yet, my "broadband" is anything but
today.
