Spatial disorientation.
No real surprises. Wes, since you stalk my posts, pass this on to George, I think you have to be pretty stupid to fly aircraft that aren't equipped or certified into IMC on purpose. |

CFIT.....VFR into ground when in IMC.....we will never know....sucks....similar across the planet every year.. Yes, I have done "stupid stuff" over the decades....that whole "old & bold" saying.....I'm still here to read, not judge.....the ground judges..... |

It was FIT, but not CFIT: the helicopter was well outside controlled flight prior to impact (steep left turn, 160 kt ground speed, 4000 fpm rate of descent). |

Got a lot of helicopter time do you? This guy screwed up. However, if you fly a helicopter you will end up scud running. But when it gets really bad, just stop and set it down. Happens to every helicopter pilot if you fly enough. By way of qualifications, I am a commercial instrument rated rotorcraft with a few thousand hours turbine helicopters.

Did this Helicopter have a autopilot?
Yes, according to the NTSB's Accident Investigative Update: "The helicopter was equipped with a four-axis automatic flight control system, electronic flight instrument system, radio altimeter, and ADS-B transponder." |

S-76's are very stable helicopters even without the autopilot. So this is the aeronautical equivalent scheduling a high event at the Four Seasons Landscaping Parking Lot, across from the adult bookstore.
Screwed the pooch when they had all the resources to be successful. A poem doesn't have to rhyme to be a home run. The pilot also had the ground to land on before it got too bad or a few thousand feet climb to the clear. If you screw up this bad as as a pilot, please do it alone. A Nine year old and thirteen year old were killed before life had even begun. On Friday, February 12, 2021 at 4:47:18 PM UTC-8, wrote: Did this Helicopter have a autopilot? Nick T |
