So how is everyone doing during this hurricane? Here in southern Lake
county only 43 mph winds so far at 1:01 am Sunday. Supposed to pick up and get more rain and wind over the next several hours. -- Have a good day and stay out of the trees! See ya on Sport Aircraft group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Sport_Aircraft/ http://www.mitchellwing.com |

Supposed to pick up and get more rain and wind over the next several hours. We are riding it out at Spruce Creek. The wind is blowing (or sucking, if you prefer) the rain around; the pool is full; the plane is nice abd dry in its hangar. We have had a few power flickers but no total loss, although Cable TV went down about 20 minutes ago. I hope that others are doing as well or better. |

We cut our Labor Day trip short, in order to get back to the Atlanta area
before the winds picked up beyond the ability of this pilot and his RV-6 to manage. Upon arrival at our home field, there was a direct crosswind varying between 10 and 14 knots, with gusts to 18, IIRC. My personal direct crosswind limits are roughly 15 knots if the wind is steady or 10-12 knots in gusty conditions. I have landed in worse, but I'd prefer to avoid those conditions. My nagging fear was not being able to land at my home field, where I have a hangar, then having to leave the airplane on the ramp somewhere directly in the path of the approaching storm. We missed the eye by 5 miles and sat in the eyewall. We were pounded for 12 hours. One of the avocado trees fell over, but we didn't lose a shingle. There is no electricity and cellphones are sporadic. Most of the airplanes at the local airports survived with little or no damage. Mirabella Yacht's hangar in Ft. Pierce was one of the unfortunate few. D. |

I fear that since Frances was weakened before it hit, and there was not as much damage as predicted, that too many people will opt to stay for the next bad one, and they will not be so lucky. Track is predicted to miss all of Florida, ('cept maybe Key West) but Texas and Louisiana, look out. Reid, you watching? -- Jim in NC I am watching very closely. I have lived through three of them in Houston and don't look forward to another one. I do have a real appreciation for what the folks in Florida are going through right now on a few fronts. In one year alone, we went through two storms. The first was a major microburst event that knocked out power to our area for over a week due to hundreds of downed pine trees and wiped out power lines. They had just gotten that repaired, we had restocked our fridge and freezer when a hurricane came through. We were without power for almost three weeks that time. We became real good customers of Coleman lanterns and cookers. It does look like Ivan is going to bypass Florida since it has stayed on a true westerly course. The big question is rather it will hit Louisiana or Texas. Either case is going to be bad news for someone since it has a lot of very warm open warter to work with. Hope it ISN'T the big one that New Orleans has been fearing for decades. Bob Reed www.kisbuild.r-a-reed-assoc.com (KIS Builders Site) KIS Cruiser in progress...Slow but steady progress.... Florida since it has stayed on a true westerly course. Just a few minutes ago, NHC updated the forecast for Ivan to strike Fort Myers. People are waiting 90 minutes for Subway without bitching. People are stopping at intersections were the signal lights are down and waving others through first. It's surreal but it's nice (for however long it lasts). D. |
