"Soaring" magazine on CD-ROM like EAA

Dick Johnson told me of this: Can you imagine all of the 'Soaring" magazines
from 1934 to present on a searchable CD-ROM? Could this be a profitable
project for SSA? Anyone have experience in this and know the costs and
potential profit?

EAA did it - the following is from their web news:

The latest upgrade to the popular Sport Aviation on CD-ROM collection is now
available. Including the entire collection of Experimenter/Sport Aviation

upgrade includes Sport Aviation magazine images through 2002, an updated search
database to include 2002 articles, and improved search capabilities from the
original version. The CD-ROMs are fully searchable by author, subject, date,

FWIW, I offered to promote/assist (pro bono) with a similar type of
opportunity for Technical Soaring in 1997, again in 1999 (both times to
Sanderson), and most recently directly to OSTIV. IMVHO, TS has been
patheticly promoted by SSA. The ball is now is OSTIV's court.

Does the SSA have the capital to invest in such a venture? Like the
computer project, this may be done more cheaply within the membership, than
contracting outside help.

Would I buy a set? Sure!

I suggested a similar concept to Larry and then to
one regional director after Larry left. My suggestion
was that members have the choice; get the magazine
each month OR download a .pdf of the magazine each
month and then at the end of the year get a CD with
the whole year on it. The monthly downloads could
be handled through the current 'login' area and would
have the photo quality downgraded and perhaps even
in just black & white, to make the file size smaller.
However the CD version would be in full color and
no quality loss. Members could elect to get both the
magainze AND end-of-year CD but would have to pay more
for that option. I haven't heard anything back yet
about it. The concept of getting all previous ones on CD would
be nice but may not be technically feasible unless
someone takes the time or is paid to scan in all of
the old magazines. However, it could also be a 'from-now-and-forw
ard' thing. Especially if the magazine was already
being put in pdf format for what I described above.

where do most of you read the magazine?

For most people they dont have a method to read PDF in the bathroom. LOL
