I officially marked the passing of an era this evening; the venerable Region
II Optical Gate was put out with the bulk refuse pickup. After this year's Little Guys Meet/Fun Meet was scored entirely using GPS, it was clear that it had breathed its last breath. Rest in peace old friend. I think the gate was originally built by Bill Dade sometime in the early 80's. It was a slick little kit consisting of a 2-piece main pole and outriggers made from lengths of rebar. Everything was nicely painted up and broke down to fit in a length 6 in. ID PVC pipe. Just think of the folks that got a "good start" call from Jacquie Doherty after passing through those two lengths of twine - folks like Jack Greene and Bob Fitch who are no longer with us, as well as folks like UMomma and FourEyes who have moved on to other things.
