![]() "UltraJohn" wrote in message nk.net... reported wind bursts in the area. Lischer was making an approach into Ocean City Municipal Airport around 10:40 a.m. when his plane crashed into a wooded area 1,000 feet short of the runway, Peters said. "I turned around, looked back and I saw a plume of smoke and fire," Bishop said. Lischer had contacted the airport's tower during his approach and "everything was fine," Bishop said. That must have been an interesting conversation, OC does not have a control tower! John (I maintain some equipment there) The reported added the statement about the tower. -- Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com |

To a reporter, just like the rest of the general public, anybody you talk to on the radio is "the tower". You can be a FL390 in the middle of the Atlantic, and they'll still write that you're talking to "the tower". Read "Airframe" by Michael Chricton to see what a ******** a writer can make of air-to-ground radio conversations, even a writer who made his reputation on the quality of his research. I saved on of his biggest howlers as a sig file: "Tower zero one request clearance for takeoff." "Cleared runway three contact ground point six three when off the runway." -- Paul Tomblin http://xcski.com/blogs/pt/ Real Time, adj.: Here and now, as opposed to fake time, which only occurs there and then. |

Whenever landing at a towered airport, everyone always makes a point about indicating their status, too, right? "Santa Monica Tower, Cessna 1234 Foxtrot Pacific Palisades, landing with Delta, everything's fine." "Santa Monica Tower, Cessna 1234 Foxtrot turning right base for 21, everything's fine." Silly reporter..... Aviation needs to be aggressive about grooming connections with local media to have pilots that can help keep these stories accurate. |
