This past Sunday, my wife, son, and I met the Midwest hopping Honeck family
in Baraboo, WI for a mid afternoon buffet at the Ho-Chunk Indian Casino. Baraboo is technically on the south end of Wisconsin Dells as indicated by airport and VOR identifiers KDLL / DLL. The casino is only a mile up the road from the airport, well within walking distance, but with a phone call the casino will send their courtesy van to pick you up and will return you to the airport after your belly is full. If you're time is limited, you may wish to call the FBO when 10 miles out to have them page the courtesy van as it was over 20 minutes before the van showed up at the FBO. Food: fair to good, nothing outstanding but plenty of variety Atmosphe surprisingly typical of a larger casino (sans show girls) but amazingly smoke filled, no evidence of any air cleaners or smoke removal system unless it was located in the gaming rooms and pumped the smoke into the lobby and restaurant Highlights: The over two story tall artificial water falls, trees, and nature setting in the main lobby. Watching a small MetLife blimp pass over the airport and the casino area doing strange steep climb and descent maneuvers. Back at the airport, while roaming around the small FBO lobby reading the bulletin boards and miscellaneous postings, Jay pointed out a State of Wisconsin Department of Trans, Aviation publication that I've simply taken for granted in the past. It was a listing of local points of interest, restaurants, golfing, camping, and hotels surrounding Wisconsin's airports. Here is the link: http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/library...ir/2005poi.pdf The title is dated 2005 however it seems to have been updated through 1/9/2006. Enjoy and fly safe. Jim |

Sounds great! I haven't introduced Jay to all the resturant options at
Reedsburg yet either... so, maybe we'll hit them next time. Jim wrote in message oups.com... I wasn't around last weekend (see the Jackson Hole TFR thread) but if you guys do that again and want another person to tell hanger lies to, I'll join you! Ryan in Madison (the OSH flight line ops guy) |

My all-time favorite trip in Wisconsin thus far is to fly in to Ephraim-Fish
Creek in Door County, call Julie's Cafe from the airport office and have them pick us up. The cafe is in Fish Creek right next door to Peninsula State Park. They have a beautiful deck on which you can sit outside to eat and bird watch on nice days. The ride to and from the airport is free, and both times I've made this trip the person giving the ride refused to accept a tip (different person each time). The food is excellent, and after you eat if you have the time you can go wander around all the shops in town, and when you are ready go back to the cafe and they'll drive you back up to the airport. Their menu is online: http://www.juliesmotel.com/ I highly recommend a visit! Scott Wilson |

Ephraim is *our* favorite place to fly, too -- although it's now sadly a smidge out of range for a $100 hamburger. (When we lived in Racine, we made that flight several times per year.) Next time you go, check out the White Gull Inn, also in Fish Creek. They serve the best breakfast I've ever had, anywhere -- period. Get the stuffed french toast, and the home-made coffee cakes... And it you get a chance, stay at the White Gull Inn. It's a wonderful, historic hotel. -- Jay Honeck Iowa City, IA Pathfinder N56993 www.AlexisParkInn.com "Your Aviation Destination" |

This past Sunday, my wife, son, and I met the Midwest hopping Honeck family
in Baraboo, WI for a mid afternoon buffet at the Ho-Chunk Indian Casino. And a great time was had by all! Ah, food in Wisconsin. It's almost as ubiquitous as beer! There are just a lot of good choices there -- far more than the more populous Illinois, for some reason. In no particular order, here are our favorite airport food places in Wisconsin a 1. Grand Geneva Resort. (C02) A lush resort with their own airport, and a fantastic Sunday brunch. We need to get there again, soon! 2. Lake Lawn Lodge. (C59) A not-quite-so-lush resort with their own airport, and darned good Sunday brunch. (Has anyone visited them since their big $20 million renovation?) 3. Janesville's CAVU Cafe. (JVL) Right on the ramp, taxi up to it, get out and eat. On any given summer Saturday, you might see a P-51 Mustang, an L-39 jet trainer, or a beautifully restored Travel Air. Great food too, and they serve breakfast till 2 PM. (This is important, cuz we work every weekend, and don't get off Sundays till noon.) 4. Lone Rock's Picadilly Lilly's. (LNR) Another one you can taxi up to. Good food, decent service, cheap prices, huge portions. Order two pancakes -- I dare you! 5. Ephraim-Fish Creek. The best breakfast you'll ever get, period, is served at the White Gull Inn. Try their cherry-stuffed french toast, their home-made coffee cakes, their unique hash browned potatoes, and their outstanding eggs benedict. 6. Oshkosh (OSH) Fly in during the off-season (meaning any of the 51 weeks when Airventure isn't happening), and you can park right near Friar Tuck's and the Hilton. Skip the Hilton, and get one of Friar Tuck's outstanding sandwiches. 7. Racine (RAC) My hometown. Use their courtesy car, and ask directions to one of three places. Breakfast: Go to "Pia's Pizzaria" (I'm not kidding) for an omelette, hash browns, and Italian toast that is worth the flight. Lunch: Go to "Kewpies" (I'm still not kidding) for a cheeseburger, fries and malt that are the best in the world, period. Dinner: Finally, for upscale, ask for the "Corner House" -- for the best prime rib we've ever had, anywhere, served in quiet luxury and class -- since World War II. It's a Racine tradition that goes back several generations. Bring your cholesterol meds! :-) -- Jay Honeck Iowa City, IA Pathfinder N56993 www.AlexisParkInn.com "Your Aviation Destination" |

How do you get there from the airport? Also, Jay, how do you get to the White Gull Inn in Fish Creek from the airport, will they pick you up like Julie's does? It's a pretty good hike to town from the airport. Scott Wilson |

So do you walk to it, or take a bus? Or ride a collapsible bicycle? What
I'm wondering is what mode of transportation do you folks take to these wonderful places if they are too far to walk? Next time I drive to Manitowoc I could visit the Lighthouse restaurant easily enough, but when I fly in, then what? Scott Wilson |
