... Do private pilots land and take off on roads far out in the country, When there are no cars for miles in any direction ? It does happen, yes. Is it legal ? And legal or not do they do it ? The FAA has no specific regulation against it. However, local jurisdictions may prohibit. Like a flying veterinarian might do if he services farms over a couple hundred mile area. A flying vet would, for best utilization, have an airplane suitable for landing on non-paved surfaces, and in many cases would be able to land on the farm property itself. All but the smallest farms would likely have a large enough area for a small plane to land. As another example of landing on roads, there is at least one resort I've heard of where standard practice is to land on the road leading to the resort. If I recall correctly, the procedure is to call the resort on the radio before landing, and they will hold traffic for your landing. Please send your answer to me also at No. If your question is important enough to you for anyone here to spend time answering it, it is important enough for you to come back and check the newsgroup for the answers. You may not land on a federal road unless it is an emergency. All state and local road landings are done with respect to the laws of the state or local jurisdiction. Is it legal ? It varies. And legal or not do they do it ? Yes. |

Please send your answer to me also at thank you In the Australian outback there are actually designated areas for flying doctor aircraft to land on the main highways, they even have the runway "piano key" markings. In emergencies they will also land on non designated areas. I recently read of a mining accident way out in the bush , where the police had to physically clear 2 kilometers or roadway of obstructions like signs and trees etc for an aircraft to land. They needed 2k , 1 for landing and 1 for take off because the road was too narrow for the aircraft to turn around. traffic was held up for 4 hours, but no one minds when a life is being saved. I am not sure we would be so accomodating of a vet though! terry ppl downunder |

Wouldn't it have been easier to push a plane backwards 1 kilometer than to clear 1 kilometer? |
