I've been on AOPA forums, which at least requires membership...

That was my initial thought about possibly using a membership-only forum to
get rid of the riff raff but mx could easily join and get access. The fee
may make him miss a few meals however...

I've had a giganews account for a while now. I didn't know they
allowed port 80.

From their FAQ:

8. Is my Giganews service available on any other ports besides 119?
Yes, you may also use ports 80 and 23 to access your Giganews account.

Great to see you had the solution right there all along. Now get that
filter built and get back in the game.

It will feel like getting rid of a lingering cold. Thanks Peter!

Yeah, thanks Peter.

I suppose we will be seeing a lot more posts from Marco, now! :-(

Just kidding! :-)

Private forum wouldn't need to be fee. You can deny membership and
access to anyone you want to deny membership and access to. If he
showed up it'd show in his postings almost immediately, disable
account, ban email address from registering. Or since it's unlikely
he has multiple Internet providers, it would be trivial to just
blackhole his subnet at the router or .htaccess and you wouldn't even
have any registration attempts, let alone posts.

I'm looking forward to some troll-free reading.

Good deal -- but I'm curious how you will accomplish this feat, given
that "the troll" responds to virtually every thread.

This filter for Outlook Express marks his postings as ignored, and anything
from that branch on in that thread.

He no longer exists on my computer (Except the posts *ABOUT* him)

My 2/1 post:

I found the following completely eliminates mxsmanic from usenet, along with
any responses to him. Using this, I don't need to killfile anyone else. Only
responses to polluted threads are gone.

Tools - Message Rules - News - - New:

Apply this rule after the message arrives
Where the From line contains 'mxsmanic'
Mark the message as ignored

View - Current View - Customize Current View:

View - Current View - Hide Read or Ignored Messages
View - Current View - Customize Current View

Un-check 'Where the message has been read'

Change the name to 'Hide Ignored Messages'

View - Current View - Make Sure 'Hide Ignored Messages' is checked.

I followed Steve Foley's instructions from a Feb 1st post and it worked
well. I did some comparisons from what showed up on Google versus the
filtered Outlook Express view and it only removed his posts within a
particular thread as well as any reponses to his "branch." The original post
remains along with almost all non-mx-related posts. I do however, see posts
that are about him or mention him in their posts.

I imagine that I would miss posts on his branch that have somehow switched
back on topic but that's probably a rare occurrence.

I'd say it was a 95% or more improvement over the non-filtered view.

Marco

If you choose 'message - Ignore Thread' while highlighting the message
about him, that will go away, along with the replies.
