Packing for OSH

We pre-packed Atlas for OSH last night, and he is stuffed to the
gills. Was feeling pretty smug about having everything ready to go
for our flight tomorrow morning (after the pool party tonight), until
I walked out to our Subaru wagon this morning.

The entire back of the car is full of our clothing bags! I thought we
had packed everything, and now I've got to find another 15 cubic feet
of space inside, somewhere.

I *thought* that packing seemed easier than normal this year!

Safety tip of the day :-)

I can remember standing on the field at Oshkosh watching a thousand
airplanes landing, taxiing, and parking all over the place packed with
everything you can think of including tents, grills, sausage links,
clothing, and even cats and dogs and thinking to myself, "Self, this is
probably the biggest gaggle of airplanes pushing their weight and
balance envelopes that have ever gathered in one place at one time.
Then I mentally went through my own personal packing list that I had
jammed in the two gun bays of my airplane.........spare clothing for the
safety meeting later on..........and Theodosius T. Bear (large stuffed
bear cleverly used by mensa level pilot to attract extremely good
looking stewardess type females) :-)
Yup. I had everything I needed for the show!!!

Hence the reason to pack what you need, then take half of it out to
leave at home. Schedule your departure home for early morning or late
evening, when the heat and humidity are up, overloaded airplanes don't
perform well. I've sat at the departure end watching and listening to
aircraft straining to get airborne. Some creaking and groaning as they
lumber skyward. People forget that they accumulate more stuff while at
the show. Some are smart and have it shipped home, others just use
their feet to pack it in tighter. I remember one year a guy and his
buddy took off heading home to ND, only made it as far as Appleton.
One rented a car to haul all the stuff home they had accumulated. That
must have been a scary ten minutes in the air! Fly or Drive Safe! See
ya there!

Here's a very important tip from the flight line ops folks (the ones who
guide you to your parking space)...pack your tow bar LAST!!
Its unbelievable how many people have their tow bars under all their junk...
