Okay, so this MI5 character has spammed almost every newsgroup in
existence. It appears to be computer-generated gibberish, broadcast across a wide spectrum of 'groups. Does anyone know what compells someone to do that? Is there a point? Assuming, for a moment, that the sender believes there *is* a point, what might it be? Is there a message in the combination of messages? Is the goal just to **** people off? Does the sender believe that he will "jam" the internet, and cause it to "fail"? Or is it the same inexplicable mentality of the vandal, doing damage for the sake of...doing damage? -- Jay Honeck Iowa City, IA Pathfinder N56993 www.AlexisParkInn.com "Your Aviation Destination" |

I think it's spy code, inspired by the recent release of the TV Show, "The
Company". Jay Honeck wrote in news:1188045914.533130.43410 @e9g2000prf.googlegroups.com: Okay, so this MI5 character has spammed almost every newsgroup in existence. Does anyone know what compells someone to do that? Is there a point? He may be a paranoid schizophrenic. They say he's been spamming Usenet for 12 years: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A694523 http://www.five.org.uk/root/#hotchfaq His web site: http://www.five.org.uk/ Then again, he may not exist. Or he may be a performance artist. As with other noise in the Usenet environment, the best remedy is to ignore it. I think you can write a pretty good filter using "MI5" as the key term and get rid of most of it--including replies like this, for those who don't like to see OT material in the group. ;o) Marty -- Big-8 newsgroups: humanities.*, misc.*, news.*, rec.*, sci.*, soc.*, talk.* See http://www.big-8.org for info on how to add or remove newsgroups. |

Hard to tell; severe mental disorder, extreme immaturity... How does one grasp the mind of a petulant vandal? In any case, it's all due to the Bush tax cuts. |

Marty
Can't believe he has been spamming for 12 years. There are large groups both commercial and private that chase these guys down and love to do it for commercial and ego reasons. Any account he uses to generate the Usenet floods probably gets deactivated very shortly--once folks track it down. I'm very grateful for the good guys who do what they can to limit the noise from the con artists and vandals. Reporting spammers is a thankless job, but if they go unreported, others see their articles in the newsgroup(s) and think it's okay for them to do it also. Because Usenet has no central governing body, it is the responsibility of the users to police it. You know, self governance and all that... |
