![]() http://aviation.beloblog.com/archive...fk_cong_1.html DOT's Peters calls for JFK congestion summit U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters is convening an Oct. 23-24 summit to discuss reducing airline delays at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, and the announcement might give us some idea what she’s planning. The DOT release says the meeting with airlines will be “to discuss flight schedules” at JFK, and I bet she’s not proposing that they increase the number of flights. “Our first choice is to find market-based incentives to fix delays so we can preserve passenger choice, but we will consider imposing scheduling restrictions as one option to avoid a repeat of this summer’s delays,” Secretary Peters said in the release. In a year plagued by delays, JFK has been among the worst for on-time arrivals. In August, for example, 41.3 percent of its flights arrived late (more than 15 minutes behind schedule), compared to 14.3 percent at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport or 28.9 percent for all U.S. flights. Between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m., 62.2 percent of JFK's flights in August were late. That's pretty bad. In fact, the three major New York area airports rank as the worst airports for delays. Here's a list of airports ranked by percentage of late arrivals for the first eight months of 2007: Newark, NJ (EWR) 42.5% New York, NY (LGA) 41.5% New York, NY (JFK) 40.9% Philadelphia, PA (PHL) 36.0% Chicago, IL (ORD) 35.7% Boston, MA (BOS) 32.8% Charlotte, NC (CLT) 32.5% Washington, DC (DCA) 31.1% Dallas/Ft.Worth, TX (DFW) 30.4% Miami, FL (MIA) 30.3% San Francisco, CA (SFO) 29.3% Washington, DC (IAD) 29.3% Fort Lauderdale, FL (FLL) 28.8% Seattle, WA (SEA) 28.4% Detroit, MI (DTW) 28.1% Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN (MSP) 27.3% St. Louis, MO (STL) 26.7% Atlanta, GA (ATL) 25.8% Orlando, FL (MCO) 25.3% Tampa, FL (TPA) 25.2% Denver, CO (DEN) 25.2% Cincinnati, OH (CVG) 24.8% Baltimore, MD (BWI) 24.6% Las Vegas, NV (LAS) 23.6% Portland, OR (PDX) 23.5% Los Angeles, CA (LAX) 23.2% Phoenix, AZ (PHX) 23.1% Chicago, IL (MDW) 22.9% Houston, TX (IAH) 22.9% San Diego, CA (SAN) 21.6% Oakland, CA (OAK) 20.4% Salt Lake City, UT (SLC) 20.2% SOURCE: U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics |
