I don't think its very uncommon. I've never done it myself but I've
flown a few float planes that are seasonal and been told that is who
they picked them up from the airport. Unless you happen to have a
runway right next to the water you're probably stuck doing something
like this.

Try holding down the ALT key while typing 0167 on the keypad (not the number
bar at the top of the keyboard).
