Can anyone provide some guidance on the necessary steps for importing a glider trailer from the UK to the USA? There is plenty of information on RAS on the steps to take for importing the glider inside the trailer, but this always assume that the trailer is something similar to a Cobra that is already approved for use within the United States. What about a trailer that was built as a one off in the UK? As far as I can tell this is considered a non-conforming vehicle by the DOT and the only solution is to use a registered importer and provide a steep bond to cover any potential modifications. BUT perhaps someone else who's done this can suggest an easier (and less expensive way)? Chris Try Importing the trailer as storage container. Find out what the rules are. When I was picking my glider from the port of entry I saw a few vehicles being imported from Russia. I asked one of the customs officers how they intended clear customs. He said they are intended for working in the forest or a farm. He also said there would be a flat bed coming for each of them. Try this approach it must be possible. Then when you go to register you tell them it is a home built. Then you should be all set. There might be another way. There is an exemption for old vehicles, but you must prove when it was manufactured. You can investigate this approach as well. AK |
