Does anyone have any inside into how a 302 calculates wind? How good is it in regards to wind a straight flight with very little turning? How valuable is it on a ridge? What does it need in order to calculate probable wind one 360 turn, part of a turn, two turns? Any information is appreciated. The 302 can be very good with wind just with straight straight flight with changes in direction of +/- 30 degree or so. This requires an accurate pitot and temperature readings. In some circumstances you might want to take a circle to get a wind estimate. In all situations the calculated headwind component will be pretty accurate. The 302 is an excellent vario/wind calculator. If you are connecting say a PDA running SeeYou Mobile or other software be aware that the wind calculation then happens inside that software (but is also usually very good) using TAS data passed from the 302 or using GPS circle drift. Also the 302 does the wind calculation not an attached 303-- that's just a display, a common point of confusion. You can look up the archives, I and others have discussed the 302 wind calculations in more depth here. You can search the archives on Google Groups (where you posted this message from). Try searching on "302 wind" as a starting point. Darryl |
