Default taller battery holder/clips for Ventus 2?

Sean,

I own the LS8-18 you used to fly. I have to disagree with your
statement "Transponders don't play well with others and don't like
sharing".

I replaced the Terra TRT250D and the Ameri-King AK-350 you had with a
Trig TT21. The Trig, an SN-10, a Becker AR-4201, a Volkslogger and an
iPAQ 3950 all run quite happily for up to 6 hours off one 9 AH
battery. As you know, there is another 9 AH battery ready to be
switched in as a spare, but I've never needed it.

Ah, Sean, I'm just grumpy because you didn't leave any of your
exceptional flying skill in the LS8!

By the way, the TT21 fits very nicely in the bottom pod under the tilt

I did the installation myself and it was very easy.
Your V2B should have the same fuselage.

Hans,

Thanks for the input - especially the idea for putting the control
head in the bottom pod. That really makes my day, as I was not having
much luck finding room for it on my regular panel.

John,

I know what you mean. I bought my current V2b from Tim Welles, and he
took all his skill with him, too! ;-).

Larger batteries means a change in weight.
Do not forget to update the W&B.
You never know when you will get ramped by some FAA guy who will
notice the non-factory issued battery straps. It can be a very
slippery slope from there

Well that's an interesting observation. Do you update your basic
weight and balance data when you load water? Is your weight and
balance then invalid when you dump before landing?

My official weight and balance data does not include the batteries
since they are not required equipment. I consider batteries to be
optional/variable as are pilot mass and arm, water ballast mass and
arm, drinking water, and trim disks. All these are calculated on
page 2 of my W/B spreadsheet and do not appear in the weight and
balance data that was submitted for airworthiness inspection and
carried in the cockpit.

Page 2 of my weight and balance spread sheets allows selection of 1,
or 2, or zero batteries. If I change the battery type and mass I
would update the protected battery mass data on that sheet, but no FAA
inspected data would change.

I understand the situation may be different in countries ruled by
EASA.

I'm considering the addition of a PowerFlarm and probably a
transponder (TTG21/22) to my Ventus 2bx, and am wondering if anyone
has modified the forward and/or aft battery restraints to accommodate
taller batteries. The restraints in my ship are set up for the
typical 7-9AH SLA with dimensions 5.94"L x 2.56"W x 3.94"H. The next
standard size up (literally) has the same length and width dimensions
but a height of 4.61". There is plenty of room for the additional
3/4" or so, but current molded restraint clips won't work.

Does Schemp-Hirth make molded clips/restraints that will fit the
taller batteries, or am I on my own?

Regards,

Frank (TA)

Hey Frank,

When I bought my 2bx I modified the battery holder to accommodate the
taller batteries. I actually fabbed up a strap just like the factory
one -- only taller. Made it out of a few layers of fiberglass and
re-assembled the unit just like it had been before. Now the taller
batteries slip in easily. Piece of cake.

Larry
