Default Position recorders for badges

Are there any activities underway to grant approval for the Position
Recorders like the flywith CE recorder to be used for badges. They
have been approved in Australia, Canada and the UK. It seems that
they GPS altitude would be proof enough of 'no landings'.

Position recorders can already be used for Silver and Gold badges, as
approved by ones NAC. The SSA, to my knowledge, has yet to formally
approve any position recorders. GPS altitude is not currently
acceptable as evidence, if the a position recorder is capable of being
approved as an electronic pressure recording barograph, then it may be
used on its own. Otherwise, a separate barograph must be carried, and
that data also provided. There is a proposal in front of the upcoming
IGC plenary session to allow use of GPS altitude, if approved (it's in
year 2 stage), I believe it could go into effect as soon as the next
Sporting Code update in October...

The SSA has approved the FlywithCE position recorder for silver and
gold badges. You still have to have a barograph for altitude though.

Fred,

As others have posted, we approved FlyWithCE as a GPS Position Recorder last year. As others have also noted, the current IGC Sporting Code requires a traditional barograph be carried as well. As a result, there have been very few badge flights documented using this method (IIRC only one or two flights total).

Default Position recorders for badges

What is the status and expected time frame to have the FlywithCE_FR300
approved in the US for badge, diploma (AKA 1000k) and record flights?
Why does the approval take so long compare to other countries?

Many thanks,
Uwe

Unless (until?) the IGC approves gps altitude to be used for badges, a
position recorder like the FlywithCE can only be used for Silver and
Gold flights, if the NAC approves it. Even when (if) the IGC approves
GPS altitude to be used I believe, but am not 100% sure, that that
will still only apply to silver and gold. For that reason, in the US,
a FlywithCE cannot be used for diamond badge legs, diploma's, or
national records. They can be used for state records, which only
require documentation to the silver badge level.

The only thing under consideration by the IGC is allowing GPS altitude
evidence for Silver and Gold badges (and world altitude records, but
that is a different issue). Some position recorders do record
pressure altitude, and where the NAC approves, may now be used on
their own for Silver and Gold badges, otherwise a separate barograph
is needed for altitude evidence. If this changes, it will no doubt be
well publicized.

Diamond badges, diplomas, and world records require an IGC approved
flight recorder of appropriate level, whether or not GPS altitude
evidence ends up being permissible (or required) in certain cases...
