I'm guessing you mean the last American ship to win a Nationals? Although David Stevenson did win the Sports Class Nationals in 1988 in a 1-34...

Do you know what version of the Duckhawk Chip was flying? There
appears to be three versions with progressively higher V speeds and
max wing loadings.

It's the middle model, the DuckHawk SV (Super Veloce), with the 200 knot
Vne.



Not that anyone would ever do such a thing, but you could do a pretty
impressive low pass with that VNE.

Now for the hopefully not $1,000,000 question. How much is a Duckhawk going
to set me back?

DuckHawk, but Jerzy Szemplinski won the 15M Nationals. Nonetheless,
Chip is the US National Champion as the top American.

Jerzy is the big story (American patriotism aside). Winning Perry and 15m Nationals back to back is highly, highly impressive.

The version chip was flying for the contest was the DuckHawk SV. The
max gross weight is 960 LB and he never flew above 880 LB during the
contest.

Nice to see Chip and Windward performance debut so well with the Duckhawk.. Great to see gliders being built in the USA.

Now what would be interesting would be to see the Duckhawk mix it up with the big-wings (and many 18m ships as well) on some strong days at the Minden open class contest....

flying the DuckHawk at the 2012 Open Class Nationals in Minden. Should

Which means that he was essentially flying at 11 lbs wingloading if the 80sq ft wing area listed on the Website is accurate. That's pretty amazing considering we rarely had more than 3-4kts of often broken lift. I never went with more than 9lbs in my LS8, and that was often too much. I know Chip didn't carry all of the water all the time, but still...

Oh yes it does. Its a small field but interesting mix of gliders and some great pilots.

I think that the fact that Jerzy Szemplinski has flown with such
consistency is awesome and not only did he win at Perry but he
literally held the contest lead at Mifflin throughout the entire
event. If that doesn't make you want to hang around Jerzy and learn a
thing or two you are crazy. Nice work Jerzy and you can bet I for one
will be following your scores at the worlds. Good luck in the 18meter
class at Uvalde.
If that wasn't enough excitement for one contest the fact that Chip
Garner took a DuckHawk (that literally had under 20 hours on the
plane
TOTAL and that he personally only had 2 flights in including his
practice day) and competed consistently with the a top class group of
pilots, going on to claim the top spot (among american pilots) is
almost unheard of. There are many challenges to competing in a plane
that you don't have a lot of experience with but Chip deserves a hand
for that effort and display of skill.Looking forward to Chip flying
the DuckHawk at the Open Class Nationals in Minden in a few weeks.
Greg Cole also deserves a hand for all of the effort put into the
DuckHawk project and for bringing another fun and good performing
sailplane to the market!
And if somehow all of this isn't enough for you the Concordia just
flew yesterday! Look forward to hearing more about the flights of
that
unique and amazing plane as well.
What a great time to be completely addicted to soaring!
If the world is wondering how to get more youth/people involved in
soaring I think they should start telling them about how much
excitement there is going on and tell them it's not unrealistic at
all
for them to start learning how to fly these machines and working
their
way straight towards the high performance machines written about
above!
