It's not a meteorological phenomenon.

It's what happens when the battery in my Nano logger decided to swell up.

The case of the nano has been deformed for some time, but I thought it was just sitting in the hot sun on top of the panel causing the case to distort. A few days ago I heard a sharp 'crack' and noticed I could see daylight through the nano on top of the panel. It pulled a screw head through a mounting hole.

When I took the nano apart, the battery was swollen. Into the recycling with that.

Lucky for me I've just started using the nano to provide GPS data to a Kobo Mini. The nano works just fine on external power from the power/serial adapter it came with. I'm running it from a 3C LiPo 1.3Ah battery as used by RC aircraft. Nominally 11.1 volts, but it is over 12v off the charger and is still over 12v after 2 days running the nano.

Having seen a few LiPo batteries puff-and-burn (from my RC helicopter days), I would be very hesitant about powering anything off them in a cockpit. I would probably use LiFePO4 instead.

Cheers,

Does this happen spontaneously on the shelve, or only when the battery is being charged or drained? I'm thinking about the ARC ResQlink PLB that I strap to my chest.

Here is a question. What happens to the official seal and calibration of a Nano when the case is opened and the battery is removed/replaced?

Hi,

Nothing. The Nano's battery compartment is separate from the sealed GPS
engine and logger section. Anyone can change the battery without affecting
the security seal.

Phil,

Are you connecting the Nano to the Kobo Mini via the internal serial port exposed on the motherboard ? If so, I am considering the same thing. Which pins on the RJ45 connector are you using to connect to the Kobo Mini ?

I'm using the internal serial port of the Kobo. This is 3.3v. The Nano serial/power adapter has both 3.3v and proper RS232 on the RJ45. The manual has the pinouts.

I soldered a right angle connector onto the Kobo board and made a cable to connect to the 3.3v Tx/Rx on the RJ45. It pays to keep the cable short. Those 3.3v TTL signals aren't meant to go far. A small amount of carving away at the rear cover exposed the connector.

If I needed a longer cable I'd put a level converter close to the internal connector and use proper RS232.

I'd also add that the nano seems to work fine with no internal battery, just using external power. It retains the settings and the seal without any battery in the battery compartment. I've been using it daily with no battery for over a week with no problems.

Geez... I'm lucky to fly once on the weekend. Daily for a week.... Apparently I'm not doing it right...
