I'm not sure about that...my father (lived in phoenix before he died)
used to spend the summers with me (july-oct in Denver) running up my
electric bill for the air conditioner. Trust me, the dog remembered
Dad the moment he walked in the door after being away for 9-10 months!

Dad had to deal with two dogs passing in their sleep. I had to deal
with Mom dying in front of me, Dad dying in Phoenix. I'm not sure
which one of us had the worse time. Personally, I think it was him.
I knew Mom was very short-time. And Dad has just finished his
3 month stay with me (he died the day after getting home).
