About a month or so ago I posted here about a MU2 going down just after TO
killing the two crew, from a airport in nothern BC Canada. Well just now I was watching Discoverychannel Canada and they where talking about the Cessna 208 Caravan that crashed a couple of weeks ago on Vancouver Island with two passangers and the pilot being killed. The Cessna has been moved to a wharehouse in Richmond BC and the TSB/BST are now conducting an investigation as to why the engine failed. Now in the same wharehouse is the MU2. The investigation is not complete as of yet but there is strong evidence that the right engine was producing full power (they showed us clues like ingested dirt and branches as well as badly damaged and sheared of props on the right engine). However, evidence clearly showed that the left engine was not producing power at all. Lack of leading edge damage and the props where bent straight back just like the blades on the caravan. It is also worth mentioning that the MU2 was almost competely destroyed by a post crash fire where the Cessna Caravan there was no fire at all since the pilot had time to shut down all systems that would promote a post-crash fire. This article was very interesting as to how crash investigators can piece togeather a broken airplane and find out why it crashed in the first place. I am looking forward to finding out why the Caravan's engines failed. There has been speculation that the company that operated the aircraft was skimping on maintenance and that may have contributed to the crash. |
