The recent boxer diesel engine from Subaru has been mentioned here
before, but I never heard of anyone actually converting/using it for a light plane. I am now seriously planning to attack such a project myself, though I'll need to hire a lot of engine knowledge because that's not my strong point: I'm an IT'er not a mechanic. At a first rough estimate, I hope to have the converted engine proven for 120HP max. continuous, compared to the 150HP announced by its maker in automotive application. Would this seem realistic? And if it is, or with whatever outher figure, what plane would such an engine suit? I'm feeling it would be overkill for a 2-seater but marginal for a 4-seater. All thoughts welcome, and if anyone is working along the same lines, especially in Western Europe (I'm in Northern Belgium) please get in touch. KA |
