Any bets on how long it will be before these units find their way into our cockpits??http://www.slashgear.com/brothe-airs...inch-screen-ri... It's not a HUD it's a HMD or "Head or Helmet Mounted Display". It belongs to a subset of these devices called "retinal display" which projects a perfectly focused image onto your retina using microwatt lasers which eliminates any presbyopia problems the user might have and keeps the display in sharp focus regardless of where the user's eye is focused. The "See Through" feature causes the projected image to be overlaid on a real world view. The brightness is high enough to work great in direct sunlight while using tiny amounts of power. The University of Washington has been working on this concept since the 1980's. Do they work? Absolutely. For them to be practical in gliders, I think they would have to be linked to a PTL (Push to Look) button on the stick which rotates the projector into viewing position when pushed and rotates it out of the way when the button is released. These devices could eliminate the "screen real estate" and sunlight viewing problems which has plagued glide computers. One might imagine FLARM traffic data overlaid on the outside world. |
