Accident Prevention
Flying gliders is dangerous. The “Accident Prevention Manual For Glider Pilots” written in 1992 has been an important and effective tool to train pilots to fly safer. The difficulty is getting pilots to read the manual. The relatively light sales of this book, and the fact most flight instructors or flight schools/clubs do not incorporate it in their flight training programs is a problem not easily overcome. The leading cause of teenage deaths is automobile accidents. The reason for these accidents parallels the problems making glider flying one of the most dangerous activities. We are approaching high school graduation time. Last year, a local tragedy involving four high school students caused me to modify the glider accident prevention manual to a similar version for teenage drivers. The local high schools showed interest in the manual, however, for one reason or another did not incorporate it into their driver-ed programs. 15 million Kindle reading devices have been sold in the USA, plus many Ipad, Knook, and other reading devices. Kids are less likely to buy a book (especially about safety) but may read it if it is on their electronic device. So, I modified, downsized, and made the new electronic version more entertaining, and easy to read and understand. Interestingly, the target buyer is not necessarily the students. The target is the parents and grandparents who recognize they must do something to influence their children/grandchildren to make them safer drivers. If the kids will read the book (about 2 hours) it will affect not only the way they drive, but also affect their decisions about drugs, alcohol and other negative behavior. The information in the book will be enhanced if an adult spends just a little time reinforcing the information. Interestingly, the same information in the ebook version will also help glider pilots fly safer – if they can be convinced to spend a couple of hours reading the book and performing the simple exercises. The title is “Driver Training Accident Prevention Manual.” It is only $6.95 on Amazon.com Thanks, Tom Knauff |
